The roots of Mortinato reach back to 2004 in the doomed Island of Puerto Rico. Founded by Calaver. While briefly a trio, it shortly went back to its roots as a solo project.

 

Before its conception, I was immersed in the cold ferocity of black metal, the sorrowful depths of gothic doom, and classical music. However, everything changed upon discovering the existence of diSEMBOWELMENT. Their music revealed an entirely different path of desolation. It altered my perception of what extreme music could become and forever redirected the spirit of this project. Though Mortinato has never confined itself to a single genre, its earliest compositions were born beneath the shadow of funeral doom.

 

The name Mortinato derives from the Spanish word for "stillborn", a birth already claimed by death. This concept lies at the very heart of the project. It is woven into every layer of the music, from the mournful atmosphere that surrounds it, to the lyrics that adorn its melodies.

 

Working alone on this project, the recording process unfolded rather slowly through the passing years. The songs emerged one by one from the shadows, rarely more than two or three compositions taking fully shape within a single year. Each piece was forged in solitude, nurtured in silence, and given life through patience and devotion.

 

By the year 2009, this long journey culminated in my first demo, "Primogénito" (Firstborn). Though it was never granted an official release, its spirit was not left to fade into obscurity. Fragments of its essence were shared across music platforms, including visualizer videos, allowing its dark melodies to wander find refuge among those drawn to its mournful embrace.

 

After "Primogénito" demo, Mortinato lingered in the shadows for many winters. It felt as though centuries had withered like a rose in a graveyard. The longing to resurrect these forsaken compositions never ceased. They haunted me like restless spirits, like a nostalgia I could neither embrace nor bury. Time and again I attempted to resurrect them, but the muse remained silent.

 

Then, on a night unlike any other, a consuming inspiration descended upon me. Igniting the embers that had long lain within my soul. From that dark visitation emerged the next chapter of Mortinato, rising from its tomb beyond the dead, with the first full length album, "Color Velorio".

 

The title itself may be interpreted as "Funeral Color" or "The Color of a Wake," a palette composed not of pigments, but of grief, melancholy, and oblivion. The album consists of eight chapters, six of which were originally composed decades ago. Most of these compositions have been reshaped, growing darker both musically and lyrically. While the album does not follow a single linear narrative, its chapters are woven together by a common thread that lingers throughout: death.
